One of the more interesting challenges we get to solve is connecting telemetry data services to our network.
We're often approached by clients looking to automate the more laborious tasks they face each day. A common one is reading meters, checking water levels, power usage, and so on. Many Australian businesses still conduct physical readings, transcribe on paper, and upload into spreadsheets, it's how it's been done for years but it needn't be done any longer.
Vastnet specialise in all types of connectivity, and one of those is capturing industrial data. Most control equipment manufactured in the last decade or so have some form of 'smart' capability, which often transmit what are known as Modbus messages over a two or four-wire RS-485 / RS-232 control cable.
Modbus is a low-level data encapsulation protocol used to transport small readings (such as a flow rate or power consumption value). To access these values a Modbus-compatible meter is sent a message requesting the value of a specific register by a specially developed software program - a program that Vastnet can build for you.
Well experienced in Modbus programming, our team can build a system to read one or many smart meters, compiling the readouts into a database with timestamps, locations, etc. Taking it one step further we can generate graphs, tables, spreadsheets, and generate alerts, allowing you to automate conventional business processes, and get back to doing what you do best.
